Washington/Geneva (UrduPoint News - 1st February, 2025) US President Donald Trump said that Jordan and Egypt should welcome the Palestinians of Gaza. I think Jordan will welcome them. I hope Egypt will also welcome them. While UN Secretary-General Guterres has said that removing the residents of the Gaza Strip from their land is ethnic cleansing. The evacuation of the Palestinians from their land will make the two-state solution impossible forever.
According to the Arab Broadcasting Agency, the US President said that I heard one of them say that they would never do it, but I think they would do it. I am sure they would do it. Earlier, Trump was asked about the position of Egypt and Jordan on rejecting the forced migration of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, his answer was that they would both do it. We will help them both and they will accept it.
It should be recalled that last week, Trump had proposed that Palestinians in the Gaza Strip be relocated to some neighboring Arab countries, hinting at Egypt and Jordan. Speaking to reporters, the US president said that Jordan and Egypt should welcome more Palestinians, especially since the Gaza Strip has been completely destroyed and there is a state of chaos there.
Trump said that the relocation could be temporary or long-term. On the other hand, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Jordanian King Abdullah II have rejected Trump's idea of transferring the population of Gaza to their countries. Al-Sisi said in a press conference with the Kenyan president in Cairo that the expulsion and forced migration of the Palestinian people is an atrocity that we cannot participate in.
Jordan's King Abdullah II also reiterated Jordan's unwavering commitment to the Palestinians' right to their land and their legitimate rights under the two-state solution. On the other hand, UN Secretary-General Guterres has stressed that there must be no return to fighting and destruction in Gaza. A permanent ceasefire is needed in the Strip. In an interview with the Arab Broadcasting Agency, he said that the removal of the residents of the Gaza Strip from their land is ethnic cleansing. He said that the withdrawal of the Palestinians from their land would make the two-state solution impossible forever.
Guterres stressed the need to integrate the Gaza Strip and the West Bank with the Palestinian Authority, and also highlighted the importance of the Palestinian Authority’s role in the Rafah crossing. Regarding the reconstruction of the Strip, he said that it is difficult to determine the timing and cost of reconstruction. Sigrid Keach, Coordinator of the Middle East Peace Process, said that “UNRWA” is the backbone of humanitarian efforts. “UNRWA” was helpless when it arrived in Gaza. He said that its goal is security for Israel and the establishment of a state for the Palestinians. He said that this is a historic opportunity to implement the two-state solution.
Secretary-General Guterres said that the current authorities in Syria are on the right track, but he explained that there are issues in Syria that still concern the United Nations. He stressed the importance of an inclusive transition process in Syria. Regarding the issue of Lebanon, he expressed his hope for Lebanon’s ability to restore its institutions under the leadership of new heads of state and government.
Regarding the Yemeni issue, he said that the Houthis should respect those working in international organizations in Yemen and respect the United Nations. He said that the United Nations is trying to maintain humanitarian aid provided to Yemen. He said that disrupting navigation in the Red Sea has created many problems for Egypt. Targeting ships has not benefited the Palestinians. Regarding Sudan, he stressed the need for a ceasefire and the start of a comprehensive political process. Regarding Libya, he pointed to the need for Libya to be able to choose its leaders.
Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League Hossam Zaki says that our position on the forced migration of the Gaza population is clear. Speaking to the Arab Broadcasting Agency, he said that the Arab position on the issue of forced migration of Palestinians is based on firmness. Hossam said that we want the American side to also listen to the Arab position on Gaza.
