Immigration debate and protests intensify in Germany

 Monday, February 3,

Islamabad (Point News Today / Pakistan Point News - DW News - 03 February 2025) According to police figures, about 160,000 people participated in a protest demonstration in the German capital Berlin on Sunday, while organizers said the number of protesters was close to 250,000.

Slogans of “firewall” were raised in this demonstration. The term “firewall” refers to a dividing line, through which Germany’s mainstream political parties partially separate themselves from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).

The aim of this demonstration was to prevent other parties from cooperating with the AfD.

Background to this large demonstration

The background to this protest is that last Wednesday, a resolution was presented in the German parliament by Germany’s conservative political party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its like-minded party in the state of Bavaria, the Christian Social Union (CSU), to tighten the country’s political asylum policy.

The resolution was supported by the far-right AfD, making it the first time that a major political party has received the support of the AfD during a vote in the German parliament.

On Friday, the CDU and CSU introduced a law in this context, which failed in the German parliament (Bundestag). The AfD also supported the CDU and CSU in this vote, but the two conservative union parties (CDU and CSU) as well as several members of the liberal Free Democratic Party did not participate in the vote.

Jewish writer Michel Friedmann, who resigned from the CDU due to recent events, also addressed yesterday's demonstration in Berlin. He called the AfD a "party of hate" and the joint vote of the CDU and CSU with the AfD an "unforgivable mistake".

The protesters were concerned about the growing trend towards the far right in Germany.

"I think it is very important for the centrist parties like the CDU and the FDP to make it clear that they are leaving the centre," she told DW. If the parties are not aware of this, they should be made aware of it.

Demonstrations across Germany

The demonstration in Berlin yesterday was the largest, but it was not the only one in Germany.

According to police, around 20,000 people also took to the streets in Regensburg on Sunday to protest against racism and the controversial asylum policy of the CDU and CSU.

Similar protests were held in several other cities. On Saturday, there were also large demonstrations against the far right. Between 65,000 and 80,000 people took to the streets in Hamburg, while around 45,000 people took to the streets in Cologne and Stuttgart.

More demonstrations have been announced in this context. The "Alliance Against the Right" and "Fridays for Future" have also planned protests on the occasion of the CDU party congress in Berlin on Monday.
