Washington (UrduPoint News Today/ Pakistan Point News - NNI. 05 January 2025) Leading Kashmiri and international scholars have said that the only viable solution to the Kashmir issue is to hold a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir under the supervision of the United Nations. According to Kashmir Media Service, Kashmiri-American scholar Dr. Imtiaz Khan said that the United Nations resolution of January 5, 1949 also states that the question of the accession of the state of Jammu and Kashmir to India or Pakistan shall be decided through a free and impartial democratic plebiscite.

He said that the Kashmiris are facing severe difficulties due to the unresolved Kashmir dispute and this also poses a serious threat to world peace. He said that the failure of the United Nations to implement its resolutions has put a question mark on the existence of this international organization.

Imtiaz Khan called the silence of the international community on the ongoing Indian atrocities in occupied Jammu and Kashmir appalling.

Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, Chairman of the World Forum for Peace and Justice, while referring to the UN resolutions affirming the right of Kashmiris to self-determination, warned that the denial of this right has led to the ongoing violence, destruction and the threat of genocide in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. He urged the UN Security Council to urgently resolve the issue to avert a possible nuclear conflict between Pakistan and India.

Dr. Ghulam Nabi Mir, President of the World Kashmir Awareness Forum, stressed that lasting peace in South Asia depends on the resolution of the Kashmir issue. He said that India is violating UN resolutions, which the international community should take notice of and play its role in ensuring the right of Kashmiris to self-determination. Sardar Zarif Khan, Advisor to the President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, reminded the international community that it had assured the Kashmiris of their right to decide their future, but Kashmiris are still deprived of their right to self-determination.

Sardar Shoaib Irshad and Sardar Zubair Khan of the Kashmir American Welfare Association (Kawa) and other speakers appealed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to appoint a special envoy to review the situation in occupied Jammu and Kashmir and report the findings to the Security Council.
