New Delhi (UrduPoint News - 1st January, 2025) The interim government of Bangladesh has announced that an official statement will be issued soon on the coup against Sheikh Hasina. Experts say that this may further strain relations between Bangladesh and India. According to the American broadcasting company, analysts in New Delhi believe that the decision to make the official statement has been made under pressure from anti-India groups. It is believed that the statement will be against India and the 1972 constitution. Shafiq Alam, the press secretary of the chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, Mohammad Yunus, announced this at a press conference and said that the statement will be placed before the nation with the consensus of all the groups.
He announced this in front of Muhammad Yunus' official residence and said that the declaration will be based on the views of student groups, political parties and the "Anti-Discrimination Movement", a group leading the movement against Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government. It should be remembered that the "Anti-Discrimination Movement", the National Citizens Committee and the July Martyrs Memorial Foundation had announced two days ago that they would issue a "Declaration of Rebellion" on January 1 at the Dhaka Central Shaheed Minar and bury the 1972 Constitution in it. The interim government initially distanced itself from the announcement and then announced that it would issue an official statement itself. The groups cancelled their plans to issue a statement after the announcement, but announced that they would hold a unity march at the same place and time. Mahfuz Alam, a key leader of the Anti-Discrimination Movement and the interim government’s foreign minister, wrote in a Facebook post that India should clearly acknowledge the anti-government uprising and restart bilateral relations.
He said that India has presented the uprising as a takeover by extremists, anti-Hindu and Islamists. He asked India to change its thinking after 1975 and realize the truths of the new Bangladesh. He said that recognizing the uprising would be the first step towards a new foundation for bilateral relations. It is the foundation of the new Bangladesh and ignoring it would be against the interests of both countries.
Former Indian diplomat Rajiv Dogra says that the Bangladesh government is not an elected government, it is illegitimate and is full of elements who were known as student hooligans until yesterday. He said that if the government is run by students and is run responsibly, it will be good for Bangladesh, and if it is run like a mob mentality, it will be disastrous for Bangladesh. Rajiv Dogra calls the current public sentiment towards India in Bangladesh a lack of goodwill. He said that relations cannot improve where there is selfishness and lack of goodwill.
