Wife of ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad banned from entering UK
Islamabad (Point / Pakistan Point News - DW news - 11 December 2024) Earlier, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that it was premature to say whether the government would revoke Asma Al-Assad's British citizenship.
Asma Al-Assad, the wife of former Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, was born in London in 1975 and completed her education there. According to recent reports, she has been taking refuge with her husband in Moscow after the fall of power.
On Sunday, rebel groups took control of the capital Damascus after the fall of Bashar Al-Assad's government.
Answering questions in the House of Commons on Monday evening, David Lammy said, "I have heard several times in the last few days that Asma Al-Assad, who is likely to have British citizenship, may try to come here and I want to make it clear that she is banned from entering the UK and will not be allowed to enter."

In response to a question about revoking Asma al-Assad’s British citizenship, Prime Minister Keir Starmer told British media that the government needs more time to make a final decision on the matter.
He said that the situation in Syria is changing rapidly and it is extremely important for us to continue to talk to our allies so that the future progress can be made peacefully.
The Prime Minister added that the current situation is complex and dangerous, but the best solution to all these challenges is possible only when we work together with our allies to establish peace.
Senior British Cabinet Minister Pat McFadden told a BBC Radio 4 program on Monday that the government has not received any request for Asma al-Assad to come to the UK.
