Why is hatred and violence against women increasing in Germany?

Islamabad (Point News Today / Pakistan Point News - DW news - December 14, 2024) According to the latest report by the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), a total of more than 180,000 women were victims of domestic violence in 2023, a 5.6% increase compared to 2022.


“Facts and figures show that hatred and violence against women are a growing social problem,” said Michael Kretschmer, Vice President of the BKA, while presenting the report in the capital Berlin.


“He said that “hatred of women” is the main cause of violence against women. According to the report, 70.5% of all reported victims of domestic violence are women and girls.


More than 370 million girls and young women are victims of sexual violence


According to investigators, a large number of such incidents are not reported to the authorities, especially in cases of digital harassment and violence by a sexual partner.


The German federal agency also recorded an increase in sexual crimes. In 2023, 52,330 women and girls were victims of sexual crimes, a 6.2 percent increase compared to 2022. According to the data, half of the victims were under 18 years of age.


According to the report, investigators saw an increase in all crimes specifically targeting women in 2023.


This also applies to the number of cases of murder or attempted murder of a woman.


Homelessness crisis in Germany, young girls more affected


During 2023, 938 girls and women were victims of femicide or 'female murder' attempts, and this number is also one percent more than in 2022. A total of 360 women and girls were killed.


According to the report, 80.6 percent of the deaths in the context of sexual relations were women. Most of the victims of 'femicide' attacks were women, who were between the ages of 60 and 80.


The report states that 322 such crimes against women were recorded, in which the motive for the crime was solely based on prejudice against women or women's gender.
