Israeli army attacks Hezbollah's 'infrastructure'

ISLAMABAD (UrduPoint News Today / Pakistan Point News - 27th Dec, 2024 ) The Israeli military said it had targeted an ‘infrastructure’ used by Hezbollah to smuggle weapons into Lebanon from Syria at the Yanta crossing on the Syrian-Lebanese border on Friday. “Today, the Israeli Air Force targeted an infrastructure used to smuggle weapons into Lebanon from Syria to the terrorist organization Hezbollah at the Yanta crossing on the Syrian-Lebanese border,” the military said in a statement.

The statement, however, did not specify whether the attacks were carried out on the Syrian or Lebanese side of the border, but the Israeli attack came a day after the Lebanese military accused Israel of “violating the ceasefire agreement by attacking Lebanese sovereignty and destroying its southern towns and villages.”


There is no official border crossing point near Yanta, but the area is known for illegal border crossings.


The UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL, has also expressed concern about the “continuous destruction” caused by Israeli forces in the area. The Israeli military said Friday’s strikes were aimed at preventing weapons from falling into the hands of Hezbollah, with which it agreed to a ceasefire last month after fighting a ground and air war for more than a year.


“These strikes are an additional part of the Israeli military’s efforts to target arms smuggling operations from Syria into Lebanon and to prevent Hezbollah from re-establishing arms smuggling routes,” the Israeli military said in a statement.


“The IDF will continue to operate in accordance with the agreements reached in the ceasefire agreement to eliminate any threat to the State of Israel,” the military statement added.


The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah came into effect on November 27.
