Illegal immigration is a major problem in Europe. How will the next EU presidency deal with it?

At present, its motto is Europe and security, but during the new semester, Warsaw's priorities will be to deal with many challenges revolving around European security. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said that Warsaw will have to work against the backdrop of unified crises.

The top ones are the crises in Ukraine, Georgia and the Middle East. In addition, in terms of European security, dealing with problems in the areas of external and internal security, economy, energy and food, as well as public health, and better policymaking for the future will be major challenges for Poland.

What more does Poland want to do?

The Warsaw government also wants to focus on strengthening competition among European companies.

The aim is to reduce energy prices in particular. Poland wants to broaden the scope of the European Union by including new member states. The Balkan countries in particular are important. As Warsaw approaches the EU presidency, it is stepping up preparations to host talks on the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Ukrainian defense.

Donald Tusk said a week ago that he had discussed the possibility of deploying foreign troops in Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire. However, Donald Tusk said that "Poland is not currently planning any such action."

Tusk also said last week that peace talks for Ukraine "could start in the winter of this year."

Poland as a NATO member

Poland is also a member of the 32-nation military alliance NATO and is a staunch supporter of neighboring Ukraine and a key logistics hub for Western military aid to Kiev.

“We need peace for a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine,” European Union foreign policy chief Kaia Kalas said in a recent statement.

“We need to stop Russia’s shelling, which it is not doing,” she added.

Poland, which will take over the presidency of the Council of the European Union for the next six months, will face another major challenge, which is related to illegal immigrants coming to European countries.

The Italian Prime Minister has also expressed concerns in this regard, saying that the EU will not allow Russia and other countries to endanger security through immigration.

“In my opinion, the discussion about dealing with the problem of illegal immigration solely on the basis of solidarity was a mistake,” Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told a press conference after attending the EU Security Summit in Finland.

“The result is that we have failed to protect our borders. We want to and will defend our external borders. Russia or criminal organizations will not be allowed to undermine our security.”

Every six months, an EU member state takes over the presidency of the European Council for six months. In 2024, Belgium and Hungary held this position, while in 2025, Poland and Denmark will take over this six-month position.
