Dozens of Chinese planes and ships conduct exercises around Taiwan

ISLAMABAD (Point News Today / Pakistan Point News - 11th Dec, 2024 ) :Taiwan's Defense Ministry said on Wednesday that it had seen 53 Chinese warplanes and 19 ships patrolling around the island in the past 24 hours.

The latest movement of Chinese planes and ships around the island of Taiwan comes at a time when Beijing is conducting its largest military exercises in nearly three decades.

"As of 6 a.m. today, 53 PLA planes, 11 PLN ships and eight more government navy ships were seen moving around Taiwan," Taiwan's Ministry of Defense said in a post on social media platform X.

"23 planes crossed its airspace and entered Taiwan's northern, southwestern and eastern regions," the Defense Ministry said, referring to its air defense identification zone.

"Taiwan's military said it monitored the situation and responded.

Reports of the largest Chinese exercises in decades

Earlier on Tuesday, Taiwan said that China had launched its largest fleet in territorial waters in nearly three decades and had deployed about 90 ships around the islands, which lie between Okinawa, Taiwan and the Philippines.

However, China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) has not yet commented on the increased military activity in the region. The latest escalation in tensions in the region comes after Taiwanese President Lai Chung-in visited the United States last week.

When asked about Chinese military activities around Taiwan, the Chinese Taiwan Affairs Office said the government would never leave Taiwan's "separatist" forces colluding with external forces to achieve independence free and clear, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

Taiwan considers itself an independent state, while China claims it as part of its own territory and has not ruled out the use of force to bring the island under its control.
