Islamabad (Point News Today / Pakistan Point News - 13th December, 2024 ) Li Tie has also played as a midfielder for Chinese football club Everton. According to the Chinese news agency, the former football coach was sentenced to 20 years in prison during the initial hearing, but no further details were provided.

Anti-corruption agencies in China have taken strong action against corruption in the sports sector in recent years.

This week, these agencies also announced sentences against various former officials associated with the game of football.

Li Tie’s confession

While participating in a documentary aired on Chinese state broadcaster CCTV earlier this year, Li admitted that he had been involved in match-fixing between January 2020 and December 2021 because he believed that it could increase his chances of winning and further his career.

“When you achieve success through illegal means, the greed for that success makes you desperate for more success. Then those methods become your habits and you start relying on them.”

Expressing regret for his actions, Li said, “I should have kept my focus in the right direction and avoided doing wrong things.”

However, he also explained that there were certain activities common in the world of football during that time, in which he also got involved.

Former Football Association officials sentenced

On Wednesday, Liu Yi, the former secretary general of the Chinese Football Association (CFA), was sentenced to 11 years in prison and fined 3.6 million yuan (473,000 euros) for taking bribes.

In addition, Tan Hai, the former head of the Football Association’s Referee Management Office, was also sentenced to six years and six months in prison.

Additionally, in March this year, former CFA chief Chen Shuyuan was sentenced to life in prison for bribery.
