Germany's prestigious Charlemagne Prize named after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen

Islamabad (Point News Today / Pakistan Point News - DW News - 16 January 2025) The Charlemagne Prize, awarded for personal services to European unity and partnership, is a very prestigious German award. The organizers of this award announced the winner of the award to Budh, on which the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who received the award, expressed her joy and wrote on X, “This award has touched the depths of my heart.”


“She added, “The Charlemagne Prize focuses on Europe, which is our refuge in turbulent times.”


Ursula von der Leyen, who has been the President of the European Commission since 2019, will be awarded the award in the German city of Aachen on May 29.

Why did von der Leyen deserve it?


The board of directors that decided on the winner of the Charlemagne Prize said that the 66-year-old German politician von der Leyen “presents an exemplary image of Europe.”


“According to the judges who awarded the prize, von der Leyen worked for European interests during important challenges.”


The Commission President was recognized for her work, praising her unity among EU member states, her leadership during the coronavirus pandemic, her decisive stance against Russia and her commitment to the EU’s Green Deal.

Uzzla von der Leyen, the first woman to head the European Commission, was re-elected to the position last year.


The last time the award was given to a European Commission president was in 1992. At that time, French politician and economist Jacques Delors was the President of the European Commission and was awarded Germany’s prestigious Charlemagne Prize. He played a decisive role in developing the EU’s single market and introducing the euro currency. He was considered a visionary figure in strengthening European unity.

History of the Charlemagne Prize


The Charlemagne Prize, awarded in the German city of Aachen in recognition of the efforts of a figure who has served to defend European unity, began in 1950 and continues to this day. The prize was named after King Charlemagne, the advocate of European unity and integration.


He is also called the Father of Europe. After his death, Charlemagne was buried in the German city of Aachen. In 1988, the prize was renamed the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen. The award ceremony is held at the town hall of Aachen.
