AI media revolution in China, number of users accessing the internet reaches 1.1 billion

The 54th China Statistical Report on Internet Development highlights that China's news media has transformed into a data-driven, intelligent, platform-based and social industry. The omni-media communication system has made significant progress. As of June 2024, the number of Internet users in China has reached nearly 1.1 billion, recording an increase of 78.0%.
According to a report on the development of China's news media released by the All China Journalists Association (AC), in the context of the country's digital transformation, the number of Internet news information service units has reached 3,606, offering 14,228 licensed services, including websites, applications and public accounts. This growth reflects the growth of the print media sector, which printed 2.61 billion newspaper copies in 2023 and had a total subscription value of 3.557 billion yuan.
The report further states that in recent years, the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has significantly transformed the environment-friendly system in China’s journalism and communications sector. This transformation has introduced a clear system change in the way news is produced, selected and disseminated. It has made it easier for media organizations to leverage AI for tasks such as timely reporting, automated content creation, audience engagement and predictive analytics. By integrating the latest digital and intelligent technologies, China’s media industry is not only boosting its efficiency and accuracy, but also redefining the boundaries of creativity and innovation for information. With this forward-thinking approach, China is emerging as a global player in using AI to meet the emerging demands of modern journalism, while also addressing challenges related to accuracy, ethics and inclusion in the media sector. The report said that artificial intelligence is emerging as a milestone in the media landscape. According to the AIGC Panorama report on applications in China, the market size for generative artificial intelligence applications is expected to reach 20 billion yuan in 2024, exceeding one trillion yuan by 2030. Media companies are investing more and more to promote innovative collaborations and applications based on artificial intelligence in fields such as film, television, and music. Employment in this sector has also seen an increase. The newspaper publishing industry employed 184,000 professionals in 2023, which was the third consecutive year of growth. The ACJA report said that more than 1 million people in the broader media industry contributed to the development of radio, television, and online audiovisual services. As of October 2024, there were 230,585 accredited journalists in the country, most of whom were champions of local reporting, ethical journalism, and highlighting public issues. China's media industry earned a total revenue of 31.5 million yuan in 2023, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 8.38 percent. Similarly, newspapers earned 6.166 billion yuan in revenue, including significant contributions from advertising, circulation, and new media operations.
The national radio and television industry, along with online audiovisual platforms, recorded a revenue of 1.4126.08 billion yuan, up 13.74% year-on-year. The All-China Journalists Association has played an important role in the welfare and professional development of journalists. Over the past decade, the organization has distributed 25.15 million yuan to help journalists who have suffered injury, illness or death in the line of duty. It has also promoted ethical journalism and social responsibility, and in 2024 alone, more than 580 media social responsibility reports were published.
