334 deaths in air accidents in 2024

Islamabad (UrduPoint News Today/ Pakistan Point News - DW Urdu - 06 January 2025) The fatalities include passengers, crew members and seven people on the ground.


In contrast to 2024, there were only 80 deaths in 2023, the second lowest number since the 1970s.


The BDL calculates the number of accidents involving aircraft with at least 14 seats.


Accidents involving small aircraft and military aviation are not included in these figures.

The association said that while the number of aviation deaths fell to a record low in 2017, it has increased in subsequent years.


However, long-term trends suggest that air safety has improved significantly.


BDL Managing Director Joachim Lang said that flying was about 53 times safer last year than in the 1970s.

According to the association, 17 accidents involving passenger and cargo aircraft were investigated in 2024.

The most devastating accident occurred on December 29, when a Boeing operated by South Korea's Jeju Air crashed while landing at Moan Airport.


The crash killed 179 passengers. Two crew members survived.


Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash.


According to estimates by the United Nations' International Civil Aviation Organization, about 4.7 billion passengers flew around the world in 2024. That is 10 times more than the annual average since the 1970s, when only 440 million people flew each year.


In recent years, more than 2,000 lives have been lost in air accidents.
