How did the conflict begin?
The armed conflict in the Gaza Strip began when the Palestinian militant group Hamas carried out a major terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. The attack killed 1,200 people, most of whom were civilians. In addition, Hamas fighters took more than 250 people hostage and took them to the Gaza Strip.
After this terrorist attack, Israel began air, sea and naval attacks against Hamas fighters in the Gaza Strip, as a result of which, according to Palestinian sources, about 45,000 people have been killed to date, most of whom were civilians.

Recent weeks have seen an acceleration in efforts by Egypt, Qatar and the United States to broker a ceasefire in Gaza, but no final agreement has been reached between Israel and Hamas.
